Our History
The Appeal to Reason (1895–1922), based in Crawford County, Kansas, was a leading progressive newspaper featuring writers like Upton Sinclair. Its publisher, Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, later created the Little Blue Books—affordable, pocket-sized editions on literature, philosophy, and science, expanding access to knowledge for the working class.
Our Little Blue Books continue this proud Southeast Kansas tradition by showcasing original work, including essays and poetry. We make complex subjects accessible, inviting readers to explore new ideas and engage in informed discussion about culture, politics, and the American experience. Grounded in common-sense perspectives and the real experiences of working Americans, our publications honor their historical roots while giving voice to the next generation of thinkers and creators. In doing so, they help promote a fair, balanced economy that works for everyone and keeps the American dream alive.
